Janice Hastings' Learning Story

Stories

Over the years I have had the honor of working with professional artists and students of all ages to create works of art. When students were creating works of art to be shared publicly there was a sense of community learning, self-discovery and of accomplishment that carried into other aspects of their lives. This to me is Rethinking Learning. Consider the following quotes from two past students:”I have Asberger’s Syndrome. This not only affects my life, but also my art.’I want people to know what it is like to have my disability. Arthelps me express my feelings about living life with this disability’one of the problems I have in my art and in my life is that everything seems to have to be balanced. Having Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Asberger’s makes meimagine things are more uneven than they really are. In art, I learned that what I thought wasuneven is actually asymmetrical and artistically very good.”‘I like the rhythm of weaving. This is theonly thing that keeps me coming toschool.’ ‘ Jason at age 15 wove in the Saori Weaving studio in NH and his weaving was the featured set design at the NH Governor’s Arts Awards in 2001.
