How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience and School shares the findings of a two-year study conducted by the Committee on Developments in the Science of Learning. In the book, a diverse coalition of scholars report that “the revolution in the study of the mind that has occurred in the last three or four decades has important implications for education.” In particular, the book recommends teaching practices that “help people take control of their own learning” and encourage learners to “focus on sense-making, self-assessment, and reflection on what worked and what needs improving.” Further echoing the ideas of this chapter, the scholars report that “learners of all ages are more motivated when they see the usefulness of what they are learning and when they can use that information to do something that has an impact on others – especially their local community.” Read or download the PDF for free here.
